The Origin Of The

EL TORO DINGHY

The El Toro was developed in the 1940’s, from the design of the MacGregor Sabot which was published in Rudder Magazine in 1939. The hulls of the two boats are virtually the same except for the skeg and leeboard on the Sabot.

Members of the Richmond Yacht Club, on windy San Francisco Bay, adapted the design to their rougher conditions by adding a daggerboard, a foredeck, and modifying the rig slightly to include a main halyard so that the sail could be lowered if necessary.   Designed to take advantage of, the then brand new, plywood construction, thousands of Sabots and El Toros were homebuilt in garages all over the world.

Since the boats evolved from backroom “bull” sessions, members fondly called the boat "El Toro" (The Bull), and adopted the class insignia of a shovel (used to shovel out the “bull”).  On many early boats the insignia pointed downward, making it look even more  like a shovel than today.  The  Junior El Toro North American Championship dates back over 50 years to  1954.
